For fans of classic Greek street food, now you can make your favourite treat at home with this easy Chicken Gyros recipe. The ultimate fakeaway, tender chicken is marinated in lemon, oregano and garlic, then stuffed into pita breads along with tzatziki, tomato, onion, olives and herbs. Even better, it all comes together in just 20 minutes.

Cook 10 minutes
Total 20 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

Chicken
  • 1 kg (2 lb) boneless, skinless chicken thighs (see note 1)
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp sea salt flakes
  • ½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 tbsp freshly minced garlic
  • 1 lemon, juiced and zested
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) olive oil
To serve
  • 4 pita breads, flatbreads (try my 2 Ingredient Flatbread), Lebanese bread or wraps
  • 4 tbsp Tzatziki
  • 2 tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 red onion, finely sliced
  • 1 tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley
  • 2 tbsp sliced kalamata olives

Instructions

  • Combine the chicken and all the remaining marinade ingredients in a large bowl. Use your hands to coat the chicken evenly. Cook immediately or allow to marinate for up to 24 hours for a deeper flavour.
  • Heat a large pan over medium–high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 10 minutes (or until golden and cooked through), turning once halfway. Add ¼ cup (60 ml) of water at the halfway mark if the pan gets too sticky. Allow the chicken to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  • Serve the chicken on pita bread or flatbread with tzatziki, tomato, red onion, parsley and kalamata olives.

Recipe notes

Note 1 – Prepare the chicken by trimming the fat and slightly flattening it. Use a mallet, rolling pin or empty wine bottle. Place a sheet of baking (parchment) paper over the chicken and pound the thicker side to create one even steak. This step isn’t essential but speeds up the cooking time and means the chicken cooks through more evenly.

MAKE AHEAD

Marinate the chicken for up to 24 hours before cooking.

LEFTOVERS

Refrigerate for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Reheat in the microwave. Not suitable for freezing.

This was so easy, quick and delicious again! I love your recipes! I don’t like cucumbers but I had hummus so I used that in stead of tzatziki. It was perfect. I think we’ll keep it as part of weekly menu.

    • So happy you enjoyed this, Yuri and that it’s making your weekly menu! 🙌🏻 Hummus would have been a lovely substitute. 👏🏻 Thanks for the rating, Nic x

Made this tonight for the first time and my family absolutely loved it! Both kids devoured everything and hubby had two servings! I used the mission souvalaki wraps which were so soft and chewy and the chicken was so juicy and full of flavour with the lemon and parsley. Great recipe thank you so much!!

So fresh, easy and delicious! Cooked the chicken on the bbq, less than 10mins to cook and prep. We used Lebanese wraps and we heat them in the frying pan. Will definitely do this one a lot more.

    • Hi Ellen, yes I use boneless, skinless thighs. Nic x

  8. 6 thighs is not 1kg..?

    • Hi Will, although my 6 thighs weighed 1 kg, you are quite right in pointing out that the weight could vary, depending on the size of the thighs. Thank you SO much for pointing this out and I will actually adjust the recipe slightly based on your excellent comment! xx
